Weekend Wilderness Survival Series for Youth, Teens, Women and Families
Join us for this fun and informative series which will
teach you the four basic skills needed to survive in the wilderness: the ability
to build a shelter, find and purify water, make a fire without matches, and
locate and harvest food. We have programs for all ages and levels
of outdoor experience. Take advantage of this great opportunity to increase
your outdoor expertise and deepen your connection with the natural world.
Women's Wilderness Weekends and Family Skills Programs are three
days long with the option of camping each night. The survival series programs are
located in beautiful Boulder, Colorado and will be taught in
collaboration with Mountain Mammas Charities
(mountainmammascharities.org).
What do we teach in the Wilderness Survival Series?
In any of programs we will cover the sacred order of
survival and the following concepts.
Shelter: The first priority in
any survival situation is to build a basic survival shelter that will keep you
warm, dry, and safe from the chills of hypothermia. Shelter
location, material selection, design and construction will all be covered in
detail. Come ready to participate in the building of a primitive
debris hut.
Water: Learn how to find
natural water locations on the landscape and discover how to utilize hidden
sources of water in the soil, dew, rain, and plants. This class
will include primitive water purification processes, the use of solar stills and
seeps, and quick methods of creating water containers.
Fire: For centuries fire has
been used as not only a source of light and warmth, but fire has also served as
a source of fascination, comfort, and companionship for many in the
wilderness. Let the magic of fire by friction reveal itself as you
learn how to create fire from rubbing two sticks together using the bow drill
method. Bow drill kit construction, tinder bundle sources, safety,
and fire structure and maintenance will all be discussed in this hot little
class.
Food: Last, but not least, many
people’s favorite subject…..FOOD! This class will lead you on a
delectable journey to discovering some of Colorado’s finest wild edibles available. Allow yourself
to be introduced to the world of wild edible plants, plant identification, and
ethical harvesting techniques. You will be amazed to find the
nutritious variety that Mother Nature offers you right in your own backyard!
